MSCommunity ITPRO User Group Split meeting

split_itpro After many months of inactivity, IT PRO User Group in Split will finally get together this Thursday at 18:15h at Faculty of Electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and naval architecture (FESB), room C502. Because IT PRO (as well as Developers) user group was inactive for such a long time, I decided to start it again. With a support from Microsoft Croatia and Zeljka Knezovic, Microsoft MVP, I’m starting this group again with a hope to have monthly meetings and to gather as many ITPRO’s from Split at one place.

On our very first meeting (third meeting total), Mario Curic from company Netmedia sistemi will speak about Network Load Balancing (NLB) clustering.

If you are from Split and you are interested in coming to our meeting, please register at http://msevents.microsoft.com/CUI/EventDetail.aspx?EventID=1032445602&Culture=HR-HR .

Red Hat Enterprise Linux now supported with Hyper-V

red_hat_logo Here is a official statement from Microsoft:

When we first released Hyper-V, support for Novell’s SUSE Linux Enterprise Server was a shock to many customers. However, we’ve seen many customers in mixed environments virtualize SUSE Linux alongside their Windows virtual machines. We’ve received many requests for additional Linux distributions, and we worked closely with Red Hat to provide this announcement. We’ve now added support for the following Linux distributions to the Linux Integration Components for Hyper-V:

These operating systems now have support for the synthetic network and storage devices, enabling significant performance gains.

    Hyper-V Live Migration

live_migration Live Migration is probably the most mentioned feature of the Hyper-V 2.0. It enables system administrators to move virtual machine from one server to another with no downtime. It is very useful if you have a huge network with many virtual and physical servers, and you need to move your virtual machines very often. While Hyper-V 1.0 provides Quick Migration which creates a significant downtime, Live Migration offers really small downtime (measured in milliseconds). It comes for free with a newest version of the Hyper-V, but it requires some additional preconditions to be met. Jaap Wesselius explains this in his post about Hyper-V R2 Live Migration. Go and read it!

    Starting a new career

procedo_logo As you might notice, I don’t write too much lately. The reason is quite simple: I’m overloaded with tasks and I simply don’t have much time to write for this blog. There are so many things happening now, and I’m working really hard to finish everything on time.

    Install SUSE Linux on Hyper-V

suse-hyper-v Microsoft officially supports SUSE Linux as a guest machine. You can install it and even get a official support from Microsoft if you have some problems. There are also Linux integration components available to download, which can help you enhance your experience using Linux as a guest machine. Ever wondered how the installation process looks like? There is a video showing you whole process, from installing SUSE Linux, to enhancing it with the integration components. This video has been recorded by Shai Ofek, Lead Technical Product Manager at the Microsoft corporation, and it lasts for 17:30 minutes. Enjoy watching it!

    Hyper-V vs. VMWare vs. Xen

fight Here is one post that might start a flame between my readers. When you try to compare Hyper-V vs. VMWare vs. Xen, you will see that there is no “the best” solution. Every solution has it pros and cons. Which ones? Rick Vanover wrote a great article at Techtarget, trying to compare there three solutions and write down their pros and cons. You can read full article here (note: you have to be registered and logged in to access all content at Techtarget).

What do you think? Is this true? Do you agree with this article? What can you tell us about your experiences with these products and what can you recommend to my readers? Please write it down in comments.

    Hyper-V Architecture

microkernelized_hypervizor Hyper-V, used for server virtualization in Windows Server 2008 R2 , is a microkernelized hypervizor. What it really means, I tried to explain in my post about microkernelized hypervizors, but here a video showing you more details about it. This short video has been recorded by Ben Armstrong, a.k.a. The Virtual PC Guy, Product Manager at Microsoft.

    Very small Hyper-V Manager

SystemTray There is a new, very simple and very easy to use Hyper-V Manager available to download and use for free. This tool has been written by Jerry Orman. It is not fully featured application, and should not (and can’t) be used for complex deployments and usage. It sits in a system tray, and enables you to monitor only one Hyper-V server and its virtual machines. You can only do some basic stuff with them, like Start, Stop, Save State and Pause. If you need to monitor only one Hyper-V server, and if you don’t want to open standard Hyper-V Manager when you need to do some simple tasks with your machine, that Hyper-V Manager written by Jerry Orman could be a tool to try. You can download it at http://blogs.msdn.com/jorman/archive/2010/01/24/hyper-v-manager.aspx .
