V-Index – how much is virtualization being used?
V-index is an online virtualization industry study performed by Vanson Bourne, an independent market research company. It is based on a survey of at least 500 enterprises across the US, UK, France and Germany and is designed to measure 3 parameters – virtualization rate, consolidation ratio and primary hypervisor in use. Results for quarter 3 2011 are here, and are not too surprising for me, except the fact that I expected higher virtualization penetration rate.
Where am I?
Uh, haven’t been here lately. I’m fine, in case you’re worried
. I have just been very busy lately and I just didn’t have time (and a good will) to write some posts. I even missed to write some news about Windows Server 8 and new Hyper-V (many interesting news there).
I’m starting a company of my own, which won’t be IT related
. But I can’t move away from IT just like that, I’ve been doing that for too many years and in my soul I’m still a geek. But lately I look at IT “from above”, I’m wondering how IT can help business. I am not that much interested in deep down technical stuff with Windows Server and virtualization, but I’m still reading about it and keep myself informed (and dreaming of having my own private cloud
).
So this blog will we changed a little bit. I won’t write that much about deep technology stuff, I will write more about technology in general, and how technology can increase (and decrease) productivity and how technology can be used to help business. I will probably change its name, and maybe a design. Where will that take me? I don’t know, we’ll see
.
Differences Between MACs and PCs
In the last several years, Apple has gotten a lot of attention and has made big strides in capturing large portions of the market. Their brand is recognized the world over and they’ve become a major player in the tech market. Given this fact, there are still many people who refuse to make that switch. Many people still swear by PCs and insist that they can do things that Macs just can’t do. If you’re on the market for a new computer, then consider some of these issues when deciding which system to buy:
Microsoft virtualization whitepapers
Two virtualization whitepapers have been recently published to introduce Hyper-V and Microsoft desktop virtualization. These whitepapers will be useful to everyone with only basic knowledge of virtualization and consider using it in their environment to reduce costs and improve business agility.
Whitepaper #1: Everything you need to know about implementing Hyper-V. Aidan Finn provides a step-by-step guide to server virtualization, including the next steps to take if you decide it’s right for your business.
Whitepaper #2: Microsoft desktop virtualization whitepaper is designed to offer insight into the suite of desktop virtualization technologies from Microsoft, and what they can do in an enterprise environment.
Linux Integration Services 3.1 for Hyper-V
Microsoft has released version 3.1. of the Linux Integration Services for Hyper-V. Linux Integration Services are a set of drivers that enable synthetic device support in supported Linux virtual machines under Hyper-V.
The supported operating systems for 3.1 are Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6.0 and 6.1 x86 and x64 (Up to 4 vCPU) and CentOS 6.0 x86 and x64 (Up to 4 vCPU), while SLES 10 SP3 and 11, and RHEL 5.2 / 5.3 / 5.4 / 5.5 still have support using Integration Services 2.1 for Hyper-V.
Windows Server 8 sneak peek
At the 2011 Microsoft worldwide partner conference, Jeff Woolsey showed a first sneak peek of the Windows Server codename “8”. As he said, Windows Server 8 will bring us a dozen of new features, but he demoed two, both connected with Hyper-V.
- Virtual machines with more than 16 logical processors
- Hyper-V replica, which will allow administrators to replicate virtual machines for disaster recovery purposes, with no third-party software needed
Full video is available here, go to 37:30 to see the part about Windows Server 8.
This really looks good, especially Hyper-V replica, considering the fact that, today, building full disaster recovery solution is not so easy. Will you use it?
Hyper-V 3.0 for Windows 8!!!
Leaked Windows 8 builds revealed one new feature: Hyper-V 3.0! Hyper-V 3.0 for Windows 8 will be installed via Control panel, offering a dozen new features.
Microsoft adds support for the CentOS on Hyper-V
As a part of its interoperability efforts, Microsoft announced it will add support for the CentOS on Hyper-V. CentOS, operating system used mostly in hosting environment, will now be supported by Microsoft and integration components will be available for the installation. As I know, so far hosting companies have been using virtualized CentOS, but probably never on Hyper-V, and this move will help Hyper-V gain more attention in a non-Microsoft environments.
What do you think about this? Do you use CentOS, and would you using it on Hyper-V?

Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 SP1 now available
As reported on Techycentral, first service pack for Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 is now available to download. Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 could be describer as a “operating system” with only one role – Hyper-V. It is free, lightweight and great solution for your virtual environment. It has no GUI, so you have to create and maintain your virtual machines using Hyper-V Manager, System Center Virtual Machine Manager, Virtual IQ or some other product.
When should I use virtualization?
It’s simple, use it whenever you can, BUT, with use common sense when you’re doing it!
In the beginnings of the entire virtualization talk, there were some ideas that you shouldn’t virtualize machines that are "critical" for your business.
My personal opinion – naaah! Virtualize everything you can!
Why?
