  • KulenDayz 2010

kulendayz2010_smallI love KulenDayz conference. It’s a great weekend organized by Microsoft Community and supported by Microsoft. This year, KulenDayz is organized in Beli Manastir from September 3rd to September 5th. First year I was one of the organizers, last year I was a speaker, and this year I will be a speaker also. I will speak about Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1. My session is scheduled at 10:30 in Ethno village 3. See you there!

    Summer ends…

summerSlowly, summer ends for me. I took a long, well deserved break, and now I’m ready to work again. I had a great few weeks, I worked just a little bit, a had a lot of fun. Many festivals, concerts, one week of sailing… I’m tired of all those parties Smile. Now, I’m looking for a job. I will graduate in a few weeks, and I’m ready to start some full-time job. I‘m ready to relocate in necessary, so if you’re interested in my services, just contact me.

    I quit!

MSP_star_colorDon’t be afraid, it’s nothing serious this time. After being a Microsoft Student Partner for more than 2,5 years, it’s time to say goodbye. I will graduate in a month, and this is the best time to say thanks to Microsoft for a chance to be one of only few thousand students around the world that are leaders of their technical student communities. It was a privilege and a huge honor. I’ve had an opportunity to travel a lot, to learn a lot and to meet so many great folks from the Microsoft and the community. One part of my life is behind me. Let’s move on.

How NOT to install a virtual Windows Server?

windows_server_installationFew days ago I learned one "important" lesson from the field, which is actually my lab, which is actually my laptop. I’m in a process of writing my final thesis, and I write about Exchange Server 2010. I need to do some demo, so I decided to start a few virtual machines. Actually, 6! On my laptop, which has 4GB of RAM. Doable. Slow, very slow, but doable. I need to have five virtual Windows Servers 2008 R2 (domain controller, 2 x Mailbox server, Hub Transport server and Client Access server) and one Windows 7 VM which will act as a client. I wanted to start five Windows Server installations parallel from the ISO files, so I copied one ISO file four times, created five virtual machines, and started the installation on all five virtual machine. Of course, as I have a laptop, all .VHD files are created on the same hard disk. And bang! I took me more than a 5 (five!) hours to install all VMs, simply because my hard disk was screaming in the pain when needed to read from 5 .iso files and write to a 5 .VHD files. I swear I saw bloody tears leaking from my laptop.

Don’t do this. Your hard drive will be thankful.

    Procedo no more

moving_onToday was my last day at company Procedo. I’ve been working there since February 15th. Although is learned many things while working there, I realized that I have to finish some other more important tasks first, and spend my time trying to achieve a “bigger goal”. First of all, I have to write my final thesis. In 4,5 months I managed to write only 2,5 pages, and I realized I won’t be able to write it if I work this much. Also, for quite a long time I’ve been trying to study and get some MCTS certificate, with no success. I will also try to focus on that. You might also notice that number of posts on this blog has dropped significantly, because I had no time to write. Although I have a stable number of visitors, I know I can do it better, and that’s my third thing to do. Forth thing? I’ll definitely try to enjoy life a little bit more. In a past couple of months I worked 12 hours per day on average, and I’m “burned”. I need some break from everything. Hopefully a summer will help Smile.

    Some info about Dynamic Memory

dynamic_memory I’m sure many of you already know that Dynamic Memory feature will be added into Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1. With this feature, it will be possible for administrators to provide a range of RAM to a virtual machine. Hyper-V will then dynamically provide RAM to a virtual machine, based on virtual machine needs. This is not a memory overcommit solution, as with VMWare; total amount of memory provided to all virtual machines will never be larger that a total amount of physical memory. Here are some facts about Dynamic Memory…

    Redmond

with_founders_of_microsoft Last week I had a chance to visit Microsoft headquarters in Redmond. A few months ago I worked on some project for Microsoft Croatia, and we had a review in Redmond. After a very long flight from Croatia (via Frankfurt and San Francisco) on Wednesday, we had a review meetings on Thursday and Friday, and a free day on Saturday. I was there with 6 other students, and some folks from Microsoft CEE headquarters. I must say that I am more than impressed by Redmond and it’s size. It is really huge! We’ve been shown a Microsoft Home (I really want some of those stuff!!! :-) ), and of course, Microsoft Store, where I bought some gadgets that I really wanted for a long time. I’m not very impressed by Seattle. It is nice, but I didn’t see many interesting places there.

    Windays 2010 report

windays2010_presentation1 Last week I attended Microsoft Windays 2010 conference, the biggest IT conference in Croatia. This was the third year in a row that I attend this conference and first year as a speaker. I delivered a session “Windows Server 2008 R2 technical features”. I spoke about many new features in R2 version, like Live Migration, Branch Cache, Direct Access… I was very surprised when I saw a full room of people that wanted to hear my presentation; some of them were standing all the time because they couldn’t find a free seat (later I was told that there were 110 guests on my session). Everything went well, all demos worked fine (8 virtual machines :-) ), and I got many questions from the audience. I was a bit nervous, but after everything ended, I felt really great and was very happy.
