Hyper-V Security Guide
I have just found this news on Microsoft Virtualization User Group UK blog. It’s about Hyper-V Security Guide at TechNet, document that 41 pages covering all security problems you should consider when deploying Hyper-V in your environment. I think this document is must-read for every system administrator who want’s to deploy Hyper-V, so check out the rest of the post for details or directly download Hyper-V Security Guide from Techet.
Free Hyper-V training
I just wanted to share this short information with you: Microsoft is offering free Hyper-V training! Here is the copy-paste of the post found on Microsoft virtualization user group blog:
Microsoft is offering some free Hyper-V training. You will need to enter a specific access code 9350-Y2W6-3676 and sign in with your Live ID. The course “Collection 6319 – Configuring Hyper-V in Windows Server 2008” includes the following modules:
1. An overview of the Hyper-V technology
2. Creating a virtual environment
3. Deploying systems in a virtual environment
4. Configuring high availability in a virtual environment

Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 boot from VHD
One of the great new features in Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 is ability to boot the operating system from VHD file. Why? Look at this example. My colleague, Ales Rosina, Microsoft Student Partner from Slovenia recently wanted to have Windows7 as a virtual operating system inside VirtualPC, for quick access, testing… But, virtual operating systems doesn’t have direct access to hardware, every peace of hardware is emulated and sometimes you want direct access to hardware, for example to test your application. Ales wanted sometimes to run Windows 7 in virtual environment, and sometimes to run in as host machine… I gave him solution.
Windows XP mode
As I wrote in my post Virtual PC is completely integrated in Windows 7, new Windows Virtual PC has new great feature, called Windows XP mode. It is free Windows XP operating system that you can download with a new Windows Virtual PC, you can of course run it virtually, but that’s not the point. The point are old legacy applications. If you have those applications that run only on Windows XP (or you have drivers that work only on Windows XP, like me), you can install those applications in virtual Windows XP, and then you can access them through Windows7 start menu. But also, you can install and use any application that you want…
Virtual PC on Hyper-V – is that possible?
If you recall my previous post about trying to start Hyper-V virtual machine on Hyper-V virtual machine, you would see that it’s not possible. But what if you want to have Virtual PC (which does not have hardware requirements) on Hyper-V? Is that possible? Domagoj Pernar, Associate Consultant for virtualization technologies at Microsoft Croatia has already tried that, and he says that it is possible, but…
Guest post – Web Start Contest Finals
Web Start Contest is a competition in creating web start-up projects from the scratch. Students need to think of the idea, to document it an present and then to develop a project that implements the whole idea or solves greatest problems that are presented in the project plan. Read full report about Web Start Contest Finals written by Tomislav Tipuric, Technology Specialist at Microsoft Croatia.
Hyper-V on Hyper-V – is it possible?
As you all know, Hyper-V uses microkernelized hypervisor, which means that when you install Hyper-V role in Windows Server 2008, it “sits” beneath Windows Server 2008 home operating system. Windows Server 2008 now acts as a “virtual” operating system, it is in the same level (ring) with other guest operating systems (see picture on the left). For this, you need to have hardware that supports hardware assisted virtualization, but what if you want to have Hyper-V on Hyper-V solution?
Hyper-V Server 2008 R2
While continuing to develop Windows Server 2008 R2, Microsoft is developing R2 version of it’s free virtualization product, Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008. As I said in my first post about Hyper-V Server 2008, Hyper-V Server 2008 is basically Hyper-V-only product (Microsoft is promoting it as a product, not as a operating system), that enables you to have Hyper-V on your machine without need to buy Windows Server 2008. There are some cool improvements in R2 version, and here is the list that compares Hyper-V Server 2008 with Windows Server 2008 with Hyper-V role installed.
KulenDayz is the best conference
In the past year and a half, from the moment I became Microsoft Student Partner, I attended quite few conferences, like Windays, Teched, Security Days… but after attending KulenDayz 2009 for the second time, I can see, for me, this is the best conference. From my report that I wrote a year ago, you can see that I was very satisfied with this conference, and I must say, I’m very very satisfied with this year’s conference.
