End of my internship
Last two and a half months I spent in Tampere, Finland, working at Technical University of Tampere. My projects were related with XMPP instant messaging protocol, and I was investigating possible usages of XMPP in different scenarios: sending data from sensors to other nodes on the network, sending and receiving data via XMPP using php script, and even trying to figure out if it’s possible to make XMPP-aware GIMP plugin.
I had great fun during these two months. I’ve traveled to Sweden (Stockholm), Estonia (Tallin), Russia (St. Petersburg), and I’ve also visited Turku and Helsinki in Finland. I’ve had great friends to be with: Marko, Andreas, Sam and Jimmy, so these two and a half months will be unforgettable. Now I’m really happy to come back to Croatia, because weather in Finland became very cold (temperatures are around 0 degrees), and in Croatia it’s still 25-28 degrees. And my new (and last) school year started on Monday, so I had to came back anyway. Before my internship I was approached by editor from the Osaaja magazine, who wanted to make an interview with me about my experiences using Europass CV. They published that magazine with my photo on the cover, and I like it a lot. This is my first cover, hopefully not the last one
. You can view whole magazine at the Osaaja web site.
There are some nice things that I learnt:
- Ubuntu 9.04 is not that stable as they’re saying. I know that Linux fans will start attacking me now, but that’s my experience. I had many problems with it (I was reporting some of
this problems to my Facebook and Twitter profile). I had to reinstall OS twice after no being able to boot (as some Linux users would say, my OS was OK, just something went wrong with my GUI. OS without GUI? No, thanks!
). I also had many problems with stability of the Firefox, but I think it’s because problems with the Flash player. Still, FOR ME, Windows 7 is the best solution for my laptop. Of course, together with WS2008R2 . - This is not real life. I worked as an intern and researcher, without pressure over my had and with freedom to investigate what I want and ability to choose to work on projects that I’m interested in. I know that in real life there will be someone whom I’ll call CEO/boss/director. Or maybe not? Freelancing is great!
- CouchSurfing rules! Global community of travelers (which I discovered two weeks ago) is great for everyone who travels. When you travel somewhere using CouchSurfing you can find free place to sleep, but the best part is meeting other people and learning about other cultures.
Maybe there are some other things that I should cover in this post, but enough things are already said. Probably you don’t want to read more of my opinions now. I’ll leave them for later
. While working in Finland I’ve been tweeting quite a lot, so you can follow #internshipfinland hashtag to see all tweets about my internship.
Also, from March to June/July, I have to write my final thesis. During that time, I would like to go somewhere for another internship. If you would like to hire my as I worker (I am very hard working person) in fields that I’m interested in (and by reading this blog you know what are those things
), please contact me and let’s try to work together.
