Why I use Windows? Part 2
Yesterday I wrote post titled “Why I use Windows?”, trying to explain why I (still) use Windows. I expected some reactions, but I got more feedback than I could ever imagine. Twitter and comments on this blog were filled up with reactions of Linux and Mac users, I couldn’t reply to all of them, so I’ll write another post which will be my reaction to their reaction.
At the beginning of the first post, I gave the list of 5 facts, but as I have seen, very few people really cared what I wrote, so I’ll write those facts again:
Facts:
- I am Microsoft Student Partner. I am NOT Microsoft employee, I don’t receive money for being MSP, and description of my “job” doesn’t include advertising Microsoft and it’s products. ONLINE.
- I’ve been using Mac for maybe 15 minutes.
- I’ve been using Linux for two weeks two years ago, and one week these days.
- I have nothing against Linux and Mac users, I thing that everyone should choose to use operating systems that best fits his/her needs.
- Whatever you choose to use, I won’t earn money out of it. No money in my pocket, no money out of my pocket.
Maybe because of the long post, most users didn’t ready all the post, and they were skipping some (important) parts. Later they were saying that I have said things that I didn’t, and they have said some lies (Vibor told me not to say that someone lies, but I don’t know which word to use), accusing me that I did some things I didn’t… Let’s start.
1. I have never said that Windows is generally better than Linux or Mac. NEVER. I gave the reason why I don’t use Linux (“…and I think that user experience and simplicity are on Windows side”), and the ONLY reason I don’t use Mac is PRICE. I wanted to say that I need laptop with 17’’ screen and 4GB of RAM as primary requirements, and that cheapest MacBook Pro costs too much for me. I just can’t afford it. MacOS might be great operating system, but for me initial costs are too high. Quality of Apple’s hardware might be fantastic, but again, for me it is too expensive. Argument that I have never been using MacOS and therefore I can’t say anything about it is true, but I have never wrote anything about MacOS. Just about the price of MacBook Pro. One day I’ll (hopefully) have enough money to afford MacBook Pro, and maybe I’ll buy it, but not yet. So, Linux is great operating system for many things, but for now, my choice is to use Windows. I’ll maybe (probably) use MacOS one day.
2. I really think that Windows (especially Windows 7) is great operating system. Linux is great operating system, I believe MacOS is great operating system. There is no “the best” operating system. Everyone can choose to use OS which ever he/she wants.
3. If you see first fact, you’ll see that I don’t receive money for advertising Microsoft’s products online. Maybe this is confusing, because in my LinkedIn profile I wrote that. I organize events for Microsoft at my university, and Microsoft products are being advertised there. So, my job doesn’t include advertising any product online (I do this to share knowledge), I only organize events (and sometimes I gave lectures) for the students. Many users told me that Microsoft paid me to do this and to write this post, but that’s not true. If somebody just wants to share knowledge (as Linux and Mac users are also doing, which is great), it doesn’t mean that he/she is paid to do those things. I could also say that everyone who shares knowledge about MacOS is paid by Apple, which is also not true.
4. One user wrote this:
because you are in fact a Microsoft empoyee (i see you convinently edited your LinkedIn profile after my last tweet )
As I said, I am not Microsoft employee. Only contract I have signed with them is NDA, but I don’t receive money, I don’t have their email address… nothing. He also said that I edited my LinkedIn profile yesterday to “hide” what I do. Here is the screenshot of my recent LinkedIn activity:
As you can see, I haven’t been editing my profile for some time, except post links to articles. So, saying that I edited profile just to “hide” that I’m Microsoft’s employee is not true (I’m trying to avoid word “lie”). I’m not Microsoft employee, and therefore I can write whatever I want, I can choose to use any product I want… I’m independent. Want a proof? I wrote an article about VirtualIQ, tool for managing Hyper-V environments. Microsoft has the product for the same thing, and these two products compete on the market. And I’ll write more posts about VirtualIQ, I’m testing it these days.
5. Also, same user wrote this:
and they arranged and paid for your internship in Finland didint they?
This is also not true. My internship goes thru The International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience (IAESTE). I am member of this association and that how I got the chance to go to Finland. Microsoft has nothing to do with this, I am being paid by Tampere University of Technology, where I work. Again, another “fact” which is not true (again I’m trying to avoid word “lie”).
6. There were so many comments that I’m just looking straight and that I don’t want to accept anything else. This is also not true. When I came here to Finland I had a chance to choose on which OS to work, and I choose Ubuntu, to test it and to learn how to use.
7. I even got blocked on Twitter by one Mac user because of this article. OK, it doesn’t matter. He said that I’m “M$-corrupted Apple hater”. I’m not corrupted, and I don’t hate Apple at all. I just still don’t use their products. I don’t drive BMW, it doesn’t mean that I hate them and that their cars are bad. First thing that I would like to buy from Apple is iPhone, I was even asking around somebody (I can’t remember whom) to tell me the prices. But I don’t have enough money. For me, Apple is just as any other company, I don’t like them, I don’t hate them.
8. I know that I’ll get attacked another time, but I wanted to write this post to clarify some things and to respond to some attacks.
9. As Vibor said:
As for Linux and Mac OS and Windows “wars” – I said it before – I will say it now – it’s so 90s
I agree with this, I didn’t wanted to start a new war, but it seems it ended as a war. So don’t think that I’m attacking other products and other operating systems. I really think that every OS has it’s purpose and can be use for doing many task. I’ve just wanted to explain why I use Windows to do my tasks. This is only my opinion and my choice, and as I respect choice of those who are using Linux and Mac, please respect my choice and opinio. Or is it forbidden to say that I use Windows or any other OS?
Regards and peace, Ilija
