    Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008

Hyper-v Server screenshot In last few days I was so busy and I couldn’t find some time to write about new great Microsoft’s product. It’s called Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008. Basically, it is operating system that looks just like Windows Server Core, but instead having 9 roles like Core, it has only one – Hyper-V. So, this product is built only for virtualization. Key benefits of having Hyper-V Server installed as virtualization solution are:

Hyper-V Server offers only basic virtualization solutions, and it is ideal for:

Let’s compare Hyper-V with other virtualization solutions from Microsoft:

    Virtualization Needs Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 WS2008 Standard WS2008 Enterprise WS2008 Datacenter
    Server Consolidation + + + +
    Test and Development + + + +
Mixed OS Virtualization (Linux and Windows) + + + +
    Local Graphical User Interface + + +
    High Availability—Clustering + +
    Quick Migration + +
Large Memory Support (Host OS) > 32 GB RAM + +
    Support for > 4 Processors (Host OS) + +
Ability to Add Additional Server Roles + + +
Guest Virtualization Rights Included in Host Server License None—Each Windows Guest VM Requires a License 1 Physical + 1 VM* 1 Physical + 4 VMs* 1 Physical + Unlimited VMs (Free

It’s interface only supports basic managment of networking, passwords, automatic updates… If you want to add and manage virtual machines, you have to use Hyper-V Manager console from full Hyper-V role from Windows Server 2008, or with System Center Virtual Machine Manager.

The most important thing is PRICE: Hyper-V Server is FREE! You can download it from here.

Hyper-V Server is not as free as it seems if you use SCVMM. In fact, there is no cost advantage over Windows Server Standard when you start considering guest operating system licenses.

I agree, but as a product, Hyper-V Server is free. Management is something else, but if you really want, it can be free :-)

      Anyway, thanks for the post.

      Hi Balachandra,

you have to purchase all Windows virtual machines, because virtual machines are like normal machines (software :-) ) and they have the same functionality.

But, for example, if you purchase Windows Server 2008 Datacenter edition, you can have unlimited number of virtual Windows machines free of charge. You just have to pay licenses per processor.

I think, from memory, you can install 4 VM’s per Server 2008 licence.

Cost is going to depend on your licence agreement – we’re an educational institution and get really good deals from MS. I think VMWare will be shown the door some time next year…

      Hi Simon,

you can install 1 VM for free is you purchase WS2008 Standard edition, 4 VM’s if you purchase Enterprise edition, and unlimited VM’s if you purchase WS2008 Datacenter edition. As I said, you just have to pay licenses per processor.
