Microsoft virtualization – from datacenter to desktop
Microsoft has variety of virtualization products, and with those products Microsoft is world’s virtualization leader. Using Microsoft virtualization products, you can virtualize everything possible to virtualize
. If you need Remote Access, you can use Presentation Virtualization, and that is Windows Server 2008 Terminal Services. Terminal Services role in Windows Server 2008 has some great new features, like TS Remote App, which allows you to “stream” applications from your server to your client. Also, there is TS Gateway, TS Web Access (which is used with TS Remote App), TS Easy Print and TS Session Broker.
Also, there is Application Virtualization technology called App-V, which installs the application in the virtual “bubble”, and isolates one application from another, to reduce conflicts between them. It also divides application and operating system, allowing administrators to deploy applications from server to client on-demand.
Surely you have used Desktop virtualization to run other operating systems together with main OS, for testing, for using legacy applications… Microsoft has two great products for desktop virtualization, Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 and Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2.
At the end, there is my favorite, Server virtualization. Few months ago, Microsoft started shipping Hyper-V, hypervizor based technology for virtualization of whole operating system without losing performance (desktop virtualization has performance loss). If you want to see benefits of server virtualization, read my posts Why should you use OS virtualization? and Does server virtualization reduce costs?
