New Windows Server 2008 power management whitepaper released
Windows Server 2008 team announced a new whitepaper about power savings in Windows Server 2008. In this whitepaper, you can see how Windows Server 2008 provides customers with a number of new power-saving features including:
- Support for Processor Performance States (P-states)
- Server Virtualization with Hyper-V
- Support for Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) processor power management (PPM)
The most important power saving feature is server virtualization with Hyper-V role. Imagine having 10 virtual machines on one physical machine. That means that you can save a lot of electric power. Let’s say that each virtual machine uses 500 watts of electric power, so 10 machines x 500 watts = 5000 watts = 5kW. In one year, you can save 5kW x 8760 hours = 43800kWh. That’s a lot of money. This is one of main reasons why you should consolidate your servers and use server virtualization.
Whole whitepaper can be found here.
