    Playing with Windows Server 2008

Today I spent few hours in computer lab at my college playing with Windows Server 2008. I wanted to enable access to internet in guest operating systems. Since I don’t have Integration Components installed yet, I had to install Legacy network adapter, so I have “normal” network adapter and emulated one.

First choice was to enable internet connection sharing on physical network adapter. I spent at least 2 hours trying every possible option in network properties on physical network adapter, emulated network adapter and in network adapter that is attached to virtual machine. And finally, I made it! I had internet connection in virtual machines :-) . But I forgot to write down all used IP addresses, and after trying to make few changes, I could not connect to internet through virtual machine :-( .

Then, I tried very simple solution. In my virtual machine network properties, I used same properties (except IP address, of course) as in physical adapter, and got two connections to internet, physical and virtual working at the same time :-) . Great!

Also, a great idea came to my mind. I noticed that assistants in that laboratory don’t shut down the server, so I have enabled Remote Desktop connection, and now I have full access to Windows Server 2008 from my room :-) . Now I am able to play even more with server 2008 and all it roles.

And for now, I have one problem, I can’t access Hyper-v virtual machines over RDC because Integration Components are not installed in virtual machine. In other words, I can’t use mouse in guest machine over RDC. So, I’m gonna have to go to laboratory to install those Integration Components, and then I will be able to use physical network adapter instead of legacy network adapter in my virtual operating systems.
