Switched to Windows 7 Ultimate RTM

windows7Yesterday I switched from Windows 7 Ultimate RC to Windows 7 Ultimate RTM. I could upgrade (it is not officially supported, but it can be done), but I decided to do clean install. Of course, I wanted to save my data, settings and programs from the old OS, so I decided to use Easy File Transfer (it can be found in Start->Accessories->System Tools). It was pretty straightforward, you need to start it, decide where you want to save backup file (I choose another partition on the same hard drive, because I don’t have second hard drive), choose what to backup (Documents, settings…), make password for file and that’s it. I also choose to backup my programs, whole Program Files and Program Files (x86) directories. The size of the backup file was around 11GB.

Then I rebooted the system and installed new Windows 7 Ultimate. It was also very easy, Microsoft made some great improvements in Windows 7 installation procedure, so now you just have to choose between few options and enter some data, but it takes far less steps that you have to do when installing Windows XP (or Ubuntu). Everything was installed very quickly (around 20 minutes), and now it was time to restore my data from backup file.
That was also very easy, you just have to double-click file, enter password which you previously created for file, choose what to restore (again I choose to restore everything) and you have to wait for same time (in my case, 22 minutes). At the end, you have to restart computer.
After everything was done, I had all my data saved, documents, bookmarks, desktop icons were at the same place… I just had problems with some programs. I wasn’t able to start few programs (for example, Microsoft Office 2007, some gadgets…), and I didn’t see any program in start menu. So I choose to just install almost all programs again, which was very easy and quick, and after some time I had my PC ready for work.

What are your experiences with Windows 7 installation? Any problems?

Doc, you can download Windows 7 if you have MSDN or TechNet subscription. Otherwise, you have to pay for it.
